Swiss School Bangkok visits GESM
Ms. Johanna Vanska (right) and Mr. Michael Gschnaidner (2nd to the right) of the Swiss School Bangkok are shown here with the GESM management during their three-day fact finding visit to the school. They have recently opened an International section in their school and it is their intention to model it on our present programme at GESM.

The GESM European Section is now the International Section
It has been decided that ‘GESM – European Section’ will now be referred to as ‘GESM – International Section.’
The main reason for this change is that the school presently has children from over 20 different nationalities covering most continents. (and that number is likely to grow in future years)
The class teachers have informed their children of this change and over the next few weeks we will be making the necessary adjustments to our documentation, school pamphlets and our webpage.
Please note that there will be no changes to our curriculum and IBPYP Programme.

GESM Certified as an Excellent German School Abroad
After the successful inspection by a Federal-State commission the German European School Manila fulfills the requirements to be awarded the certificate of “Excellent German School Abroad”.
To fulfill the requirements of the certificate, positive results in at least 5 out of 11 of the 15 quality characteristics are necessary. The 15 quality characteristics are described in detail with 72 indicators. The German European School received 100% positive results in all 15 characteristics. An outstanding result!>
Before arriving in Manila, the commission analyzed documents comprising of 7 Gigabytes. On the campus they scrutinized the school: Examining further files, rating 31 lessons, monitoring the breaks, examining the facilities, interviewing parents, students, the governing board and staff for several hours. They were also invited to dinner by our ambassador Christian-Ludwig Weber-Lortsch to exchange ideas about the school’s network and cooperation with representatives of the embassy, Goethe-Institut and the German Chamber of Commerce.
In his reply to the result presented by the commission on March, 31 the Head of School, Mr. Kollecker, expressed his gratitude to parents, students, teachers and the board of directors for their commitment and cooperation. He thanked the inspectors for their encouraging feedback.
He was especially happy to see that the commission inspected all sections of the school including the European Section and IB Diploma, and he interpreted it as a sign that the authorities in Germany accept the school’s development as one school operating under a dual system:
"This certificate of excellence for the whole school is a great encouragement for GESM and its concept of an integrated school with an English speaking section. We feel encouraged to continuously build our future on this concept."

GESM bags 3rd Place in international tilt
Parañaque City, June 8, 2010 -- The German European School Manila (GESM) placed third in the German International Chamber of Commerce (GIHM) "Students Building Bridges Worldwide" competition.
GESM was recognized for the community work its students did in the aftermath of typhoon Ondoy last year and for its annual Spaghetti Project for an impoverished community in Parañaque City.
In awarding GESM third place among 42 entries, GIHM president Dr. Hans Heinrich Driftmann cited the impact of the outreach projects on the development of the students.
"The jury was convinced by the hands-on special projects conducted by various classes of your school starting in Grade 1 since these contribute largely to the personal development and social consciousness of the students," Dr. Driftmann said.
In the aftermath of typhoon Ondoy late last year, GESM students voluntarily gathered themselves together to bring food, clothing, and other basic necessities to affected families in Marikina City.
Meanwhile, the annual Spaghetti party is a feeding program and Christmas gift giving to the impoverished community of Sitio El Dorado in Parañaque City. Grades 1 and 2 students donate part of their allowance to prepare spaghetti dishes which they personally serve to the children living in the community.
German Vice Chancellor and Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Guido Westerwelle and Driftmann will hand the award together with €15,000 to GESM during a ceremony at the House of German Economy in Berlin.
The German European School Manila (GESM) is a European international school established in 1980 with two parallel sections offering all grades from Kindergarten through Grade 12. The students study towards an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. While the German Section is primarily for German-speaking students, the European Section mainly accepts English speakers. All students study French as an additional language.
