GESM bags 3rd Place in international tilt
Parañaque City, June 8, 2010 -- The German European School Manila (GESM) placed third in the German International Chamber of Commerce (GIHM) "Students Building Bridges Worldwide" competition.
GESM was recognized for the community work its students did in the aftermath of typhoon Ondoy last year and for its annual Spaghetti Project for an impoverished community in Parañaque City.
In awarding GESM third place among 42 entries, GIHM president Dr. Hans Heinrich Driftmann cited the impact of the outreach projects on the development of the students.
"The jury was convinced by the hands-on special projects conducted by various classes of your school starting in Grade 1 since these contribute largely to the personal development and social consciousness of the students," Dr. Driftmann said.
In the aftermath of typhoon Ondoy late last year, GESM students voluntarily gathered themselves together to bring food, clothing, and other basic necessities to affected families in Marikina City.
Meanwhile, the annual Spaghetti party is a feeding program and Christmas gift giving to the impoverished community of Sitio El Dorado in Parañaque City. Grades 1 and 2 students donate part of their allowance to prepare spaghetti dishes which they personally serve to the children living in the community.
German Vice Chancellor and Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Guido Westerwelle and Driftmann will hand the award together with €15,000 to GESM during a ceremony at the House of German Economy in Berlin.
The German European School Manila (GESM) is a European international school established in 1980 with two parallel sections offering all grades from Kindergarten through Grade 12. The students study towards an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma. While the German Section is primarily for German-speaking students, the European Section mainly accepts English speakers. All students study French as an additional language.

Art exhibits, music and dance recitals and other performances will create the festive ambiance for a fun filled outdoor dinner party under the (hopefully) starry night at the school grounds.
An auction of artworks will be one of the highlights of the evening as well as a grand raffle draw.
Tickets are available at the secretariat.

GESM Cup 2010
EIS Boys and Girls Football Team Bring Home Gold Again
EIS U14 Boys and U14 Girls football teams successfully bagged the Gold on January 16, 2010 at the GESM Cup 2010 held at Nomad Sports Club, Paranaque.
CONGRATULATIONS! Not only to the winning team, but for the rest of our brave athletes who competed in the U10 Boys, U10Girls, U12 Boys, U12 Girls and the U18 Boys. Facing difficult odds, very physical, older and larger opponents, our boys and girls battled hard and relentlessly stood their ground. Under the skillful and determined direction of Coach Darren Hartmann and his staff, as well as our IB volunteers who acted as assistant coaches, the EIS Bears quickly adopted and established their own play. Many referees and spectators offered their praise of the EIS team throughout the day.
I would also like to acknowledge the two Most Valuable Players of EIS, Claudius Von Ramm for U14 Boys and Elena Heuze for the U14 Girls. They, along with the rest of the winning teams, made Mr. Kollecker proud as he presented the trophies and medals. Mr. Wolfgang Kollecker led the medal and trophy presentation, and gave the welcome speech. We all hope that there will be more GESM Cup after this.
All medals and trophies were sponsored by the German European School Manila.
Join us in congratulating the team, the coaching staff, the EIS volunteers, the parents and all the sponsors for their help, support and commitment.
The entire EIS community is proud. We know our school’s teams have a promising future ahead of them for many years to come.

Christmas at the GESM!
Last Saturday, the school’s community met to celebrate Christmas. Almost everybody was present to participate in our yearly Christmas tradition and to sit back and enjoy the students’ presentations.
It was a treat to watch the excellent performances from all grade levels and the it was apparent that everyone enjoyed the camaraderie and the spirit of Christmas!

IB Students at the German Embassy
“On behalf of His Excellency, Christian Ludwig Weber-Lortsch, Ambassador of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Manila we would like to invite you to a meeting to discuss about your support and commitment for those who were affected by the recent typhoons.” - October 20, 2009
On October 29, 2009 at three in the afternoon at the German Embassy in Makati, His Excellency Christian Ludwig Weber-Lortsch hosted tea for the GESM family represented by a parent, two IB teachers and eight IB students. It was not the usual formal meeting with a diplomat as one would expect. It was a casual exchange of stories while we enjoyed the delicious food prepared by Mrs. Weber-Lortsch. We were given souvenirs of caps, pens and information on Germany. The most valuable souvenirs we have were the precious moments we shared with His Excellency, the Ambassador and the photos taken with him.
From one voice, the GESM was almost instantaneously mobilized like a well-oiled machine. Fuelled by sheer desire to help, donations kept coming from parents and supporters of the school. Even students gave their own personal allowances to help the victims of the devastating Typhoon “Ondoy (Ketsana)” (which flooded the streets of Metro Manila on September 26, 2009 and sent families to their roofs for days without food and water).
Hannah Schifferer, an IB -1 student expressed her desire to help, and Mr. Christoph Grandt, our CAS Coordinator lost no time in mobilizing the “IB Relief Team”. That Monday night, September 28, 2009 plans were all set for the next day’s first relief work.
As early as the first hour of Tuesday morning, September 29, 2009 the team has grown into the “GESM Relief Team”. Mrs. Suzanne Faelnar-Camara, a parent, accompanied the IB-1 students to buy sacks of rice, bottled water, noodles, canned goods and powdered milk. To fully pay for the relief goods, some of us generously gave our own personal cash. We quickly brought the relief goods back to school and immediately organized to repack them. The younger grades and their teachers, parents, and GESM staff joined us in repacking, as the donations kept on coming in the succeeding days. The IB students, ably led by IB President, Marten Scholz delivered all the relief goods to the victims in Marikina, Pateros and Muntinlupa on designated days. The Head of the School, Mr. Wolfgang Kollecker; the IB Coordinator, Mr. Roland Heinmuller; IB teachers, Mr. Christoph Grandt and Mr. Jörg Dietze; teachers of other grades headed by Ms. Ina Andersen; IB parent, Mrs. Westreicher and Mrs. Faelnar-Camara, among others, joined these trips.
As we pay tribute to all the supporters, parents, teachers, students and school staff of GESM who all helped in their own unselfish way, please allow me to name the students of the “IB Relief Team”:
IB -2 (Janine Delas, Isabel Kruger-Sprengel, Johann Kuchta, Daniel Schafe, Marten Scholz, and Alexander Von Ramm)
IB -1 (Bernhard Ashauer, Jose Cortes, Wilhelm Donko, Ana Grabherr, Natascha Kotte, Marc Kruger-Sprengel, Louise Meriguet, Yashi Shrivastava, Hannah Schifferer, Jeannine Tan, Mercedes Trejo, Marie Westreicher, Patricia Windelband, and Kim Wolf)
The relief work we started has just begun. We know that the GESM family is committed to continue its efforts to be responsive to the needs of the times.

The Aftermath of 'Ondoy' (Ketsana)
Metro Manila was caught unprepared for the devastation brought about by typhoon Ondoy during the weekend. Thousands of families were affected, losing homes, properties and even lives.
Thankfully, the school fared well during the onslaught of the rains. And because of this privileged status, concerned students and parents from our school together with teachers, organised themselves and put together our very own relief mission to the victims of this tragic event.
Our team went to affected areas in Marikina and Muntinlupa to provide basic needs like food and medicine to those families in dire need of help. Our school community continues to accept donations to send to the affected areas as soon as possible.
