DEPUTY HEADMASTER
Liebe Eltern, liebe Schülerinnen und Schüler, liebe Lehrerinnen und Lehrer,
​
die kurze Schulwoche ging im Flug vorüber und sogar der heutige Donnerstag wurde wegen der Wetterlage noch verkürzt, da wir unsere Schüler früher nach Hause schickten und auch die Nachmittagsaktivitäten absagten. Die erweiterte Schulleitung ist fast wieder vollzählig anwesend. Herr Ross ist aus Deutschland zurück und Herr Thiergen wird am Montag wieder bei uns sein.
Trotz des heftigen Monsunregens ging unser Schulbetrieb fast ungestört weiter. Die Wasserschäden in den Klassenzimmern und in der Lobby werden schnell behoben sein. Zu Fragen mancher Mitglieder der Schulgemeinschaft führte meine Entscheidung, in Abstimmung mit LFM den Schulbetrieb aufrecht zuerhalten. Sie erhalten natürlich eine besondere Mitteilung zur Begründung und zu den Konsequenzen meiner Entscheidung. Vielen Dank für Ihre Rückmeldungen und für Ihr Verständnis.
Am Mittwoch legten die Kinder der deutschen Vorschule ihre Seepferdchenprüfung ab.
Die Sieger des Vorlesewettbewerbs der Klasse 6d wurden bekanntgegeben: Den ersten Preis erhielt Timo Köhler (92 Punkte), den zweiten Preis teilen sich punktgleich Sven Dunder, Tate Hoschka und Alifa Thiergen (82 Punkte), den 3. Platz belegte Julietta Hurtubia Neitzel (78) Punkte. Die Siegerehrung wird Teil des Sommerfestes sein.

Am Freitag beginnt mit dem Feiertag zum Fastenende schon das zweite lange Wochenende. Die nächste Woche lässt uns dann schon das Schuljahresende spüren: Die Kinder des internationalen Kindergartens bekommen am 22. Juni ihre Zeugnisse und die Preprimary bastelt die Tüten für ihren Start in die erste Klasse. Erwähnenswert ist auch die Ausstellung der Klasse 5 (PYP) unter Leitung von Tim Balaz
Am Samstag, den 23. Juni, folgt das Sommerfest. Teil dieses Sommerfestes wird auch wieder der traditionelle Büchermarkt sein.
Für die nächste Woche anzukündigen sind außerdem der gemeinsame Ausflug der Klasse 5d am 26.6. nach Cavite. Dort wird die Klasse mit Herrn Simmelbauer Island Cove besuchen. Es ist der traditionelle Ausflug der 5. Klasse vor dem Übertritt in die Sekundarstufe.
Eindrucksvolle Schülerleistungen werden nächste Woche in der Kunstausstellung der Klassen 7d und 8d zur Schau gestellt, die erneut von Nicole Huber organisiert wird. Thema der Ausstellung in der Lobby ist „Räumlichkeit und Schrift“.
Von besonderem Interesse für die ganze Schule wird der Besuch von Herrn Frank sein, dem Bewerber für die Nachfolge von Herrn Thiergen. Näheres entnehmen Sie bitte dem Schreiben des Vorstandsvorsitzenden Rainer Gütler. Weitere Informationen werden in der kommenden Woche bekanntgegeben.

Dear parents, dear students, dear teachers,
This short school week passed in a flash, and today, Thursday, was even shortened further due to the weather conditions as we sent our students home earlier. Management is almost complete again: Mr. Ross has arrived back from Germany, and Mr. Thiergen will be back at school on Monday.
Despite the heavy monsoon rain, our school operations continued almost undisturbed. The damage caused by water in some rooms and in the lobby will be quickly repaired. My decision to have the school open today in consultation with LFM led to questions of members of the school community. Of course, you will receive a special letter explaining the reasons and consequences of my decision. Thank you for your feedback and your understanding.
On Wednesday, the children of the German pre-school passed their “sea horse test”.
The winners were announced this week for the reading contest: Timo Köhler (92 points) won the first prize, the second prize is shared by Sven Dunder, Tate Hoschka and Alifa Thiergen (82 points). Julietta Hurtubia Neitzel (78) won the third prize. The award ceremony will be part of the Summer Fest.

Tomorrow, Friday, will be the start into the second long weekend in a row. The next week will then already make us feel the end of the school year: The children of the International Kindergarten will receive their Early Years report cards on the 22nd, and the Preprimary will craft their cones for their start into the first class next school year. Also noteworthy is the exhibition of class 5 (PYP) under the direction of Tim Balaz the same day.
On Saturday, 23rd of June, the Summer Fest will follow. Part of this summer festival will again be our traditional book fair.
Impressive student performances will be shown next week in the 7d and 8d Art Exhibition, once again organized by Nicole Huber. Theme of the artworks is "Perspective, Letters and Words".
For June 26th next week, there is also scheduled the class 5d excursion to Cavite. Mr. Simmelbauer will visit Island Cove with his class. It is the traditional excursion of the 5th graders before entering Middle School.
Of particular interest will be Mr. Christoph Boris Frank’s visit next week, the candidate for Mr. Thiergen’s succession. For further information, please refer to the letter of the Chairman of the Board, Rainer Gütler. More detailed information will be announced next week.

Information from the GESM Board - Recruitment of Head of School

Dear GESM Parents, Teachers and Staff,
As you all know our headmaster Mr. Andreas Thiergen will be leaving GESM at the end of this school year and return to Germany. When this decision was made, the Board immediately started a recruitment process for the position of headmaster together with the German school authorities (ZfA). This process proved challenging at first with no candidates identified by ZfA in the first round of recruitment. However, the second round yielded 2 candidates. Following information from ZfA on 31st of May, the Board interviewed both candidates and one candidate was selected to visit Manila next week.
Mr. Boris Christoph Frank will be at school on Wednesday and Thursday, the 20th and 21st of June for further interviews with the board as well as for meetings with stakeholder groups of the school community, including senior management, heads of sections, teacher representatives, parents and student representatives. The GESM Board expects important and relevant feedback from these meetings to arrive at a decision which is supported by the GESM school community. We thank all stakeholders in advance for their meaningful contributions to this selection process.

Fifth Graders invite the GESM Community to the PYP Exhibition
The 5th grade students cordially invite all members of the GESM Community to attend the 2018 Primary Years Programme (PYP) Exhibition on June 21, Friday from 9:30 – 11:00 am in the Grades 3 and 5 classrooms. The Exhibition represents a significant event in the life of a fifth-grade student.
For this year's exhibition, students worked with the theme Where We Are in Place and Time and explored the following issues:

Letter to Parents
Liebe Grundschuleltern,
das Schuljahr neigt sich dem Ende zu und leider müssen wir uns wie in jedem Jahr von einigen Mitschülern verabschieden. Mitschüler verlassen uns und die gesamte Klasse 5 tritt nun in die Sekundarstufe über. Traditionell begehen wir diesen Abschied mit einem letzten gemeinsamen Ausflug. Dienstag den 26.06.2018 wollen wir gleich morgens um 7.30 Uhr zu „Island Cove“ in Cavite starten (http://www.islandcove.ph/ ). Island Cove ist eine Naherholungsanlage mit einem Zoo, großem Wasserspielplatz und Riesenrutschen. Es ist ein großes Nichtschwimmerbecken vorhanden. Die Rettungsschwimmer vor Ort werden durch ein vergrößertes Grundschulteam verstärkt.
Mitzubringen sind Badekleidung, Handtuch und Sonnenschutz und eine gefüllte Wasserflasche.
Überdies können sie ihrem Kind sowohl Snacks und Drinks für die Busfahrt als auch ein kleines Taschengeld für Eiskreme oder Ähnliches mitgeben. Das Mittagessen ist im Gesamtpreis mitinbegriffen.

Da für den Ausflug das restliche Geld aus den jeweiligen Klassenkassen verwendet wird, sind die Kosten von Klasse zu Klasse unterschiedlich und werden ihrem Kind per Elternbrief mitgeteilt.
​
Wir werden um 15.20 Uhr wieder an der Schule sein, von wo aus die Kinder mit den Schulbussen nach Hause gebracht werden können.
Falls sie noch Fragen haben wenden sie sich bitte an Ihren Klassenlehrer.

Dear parents,
As a last bonding event for this school year, we want to visit Island Cove in Cavite on Tuesday 26thJune. You can find information about the facilities on http://www.islandcove.ph/. Please bring swim clothes, towel, sun protection, a filled water bottle and some pocket money. The price for the trip including transport, entrance fee and lunch is communicated with your child via information letter. It varies from class to class since we are using up the leftover class funds. Please pay to your class teacher until 20th of June.

We’ll be back at school around 3.20pm. School busses will bring the kids home unless pickup is arranged otherwise.

Traditionell legen die Kinder der Vorschule am Ende des Schuljahres ihre Seepferdchen Prüfung ab. So auch an diesem verregneten Mittwochmorgen dem 13.Juni. Immerhin 4 Kindern können wir bereits zur bestandenen Prüfung gratulieren, die den Sprung vom Beckenrand, 25m Schwimmen und das Hochholen eines Tauchringes aus schultertiefen Wasser umfasst. Wollen wir hoffen, dass sich das Wetter in den kommenden 3 Wochen nochmals etwas verbessert, sodass auch der Rest der Gruppe nochmal die Chance hat das Abzeichen zu erhalten.
Dieses Jahr nahm die ungewöhnliche Zahl von 18 Schülerinnen und Schülern der Klasse 6 des Deutschen Zweigs an unserem Lesewettbewerb teil. Der Wettbewerb wurde vom Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels organisiert. Ziel ist, die Lesefähigkeiten der Sechstklässler zu fördern und ihr Interesse und ihre Freude am Lesen weiter zu steigern, was angesichts der neuen Medien immer wichtiger und schwieriger wird. Am Ende der Veranstaltung wurden die 5 Gewinner durch die Lehrer-Jury bestimmt. Sie werden am Sommerfest mit einer offiziellen Urkunde ausgezeichnet.

This year, the extraordinary number of 18 students from class 6 in the German Section took part in our annual reading competition. This competition, organised by the the German Publishers and Booksellers Association, aims to strengthen the reading skills of 6th graders in all German schools within Germany and abroad. We are striving to make reading even more interesting to our kids, which is getting more and more difficult in our media-centred world.
