MESSAGE
FROM THE
DEPUTY HEAD
OF SCHOOL
Dear parents, students, and teachers,

I would like to start with a very happy message: Mr. Christoph Boris Frank has finally received his visa and and will come to Manila next week. We are looking forward to welcoming him in a short ceremony which will be arranged at short notice. At last the days of distress for the school management are over, and as a strengthened team we are going to tackle all the challenges of further school development according to the new pedagogical concept of GESM.

In line with this, school management is planning to reorganize communication with parents. The previous newsletter will not appear in this or a similar form every week, but only once a month. The reasons are the high amount of time the head of school spends on the circular, but especially the amount of information that can not always be fully absorbed and processed by the reader. In future, management will inform you rather in smaller portions, or refer you to the website of the school.

As to events: The next upcoming school event is the Retreat. Please refer to Ms Carcamo’s letter below.

Interesting for you to know, Mr. Harry Gerbig arrived from China this week. With his rich experience and his professional formation as a social pedagogue, Mr. Gerbig will be our new Guidance Counselor, but he is also also an experienced drama teacher and an expert teacher of German as a foreign language at all levels. Especially the prospect of having a school theater group has already aroused enthusiasm among the students.

I would also like to draw your attention to some sensitive points of the school rules, which are supplemented by some reminders below this letter.
​
As far as the dress code is concerned, the school decided to choose a pedagogical approach rather than a disciplinary one. The earlier rules will be seen as recommendations, and conflicts will be resolved together with the Guidance Counselor and the parents. Our goal is to create insight and help students reflect their outward appearance and its effect on others in different situations.
​
There is another point to mention especially for the parents of the International Section: As you know, having a diary for use in school is highly recommended as it is used for noting the homework as well as for parent-teacher communication. Similarly, the school notebooks with their colour system are useful because they help strengthen the feeling of identity due to the logo on every notebook and other features that make them our common GESM notebooks in the International and the German sections.

This year we are going to change the system, but only slightly. We will keep recommending and offering you the convenient option to buy a diary and textbooks from our boutique, but as we want to give you more freedom in your choices, we will in future leave the decision to you should you wish to buy textbooks and a diary elsewhere. In this case, we only oblige students to use the paper cover with the school logo that we will provide for you at no cost. In case of the diary, if it is not from our school, we will provide forms that have to be glued into them. We are hoping for your understanding for trying to find the best and most economical solution for all.
Another important point: It has already been told that In the upcoming parents evenings we will not be distribute printed copies of the manual anymore. The latest version will be available on the website, and can be printed out if necessary. The school will inform you about any changes or update by mail.

Something very promising for our school is that very soon German courses and Tagalog courses will be offered, which wil also be open to parents. Further information will be sent to you as soon as possible.
​
It remains to be mentioned that you will find some beautiful photos of our welcoming event for the first graders here in this issue of the circular. Apart from that, I would also like to draw your attention to the ECA programme.

ich möchte mit einer sehr freudigen Nachricht beginnen: Herr Christoph Boris Frank hat sein Visum erhalten und wird nächste Woche nach Manila fliegen. Wir freuen uns darauf, dass so die etwas stressige Zeit für die Schulleitung zu Ende geht und nun ein gestärktes Team die Schulentwicklung vorantreibt.
In Übereinstimmung mit der Strategie der Schulentwicklung plant die Schulleitung, die Kommunikation mit den Eltern neu zu organisieren. Der bisherige Rundbrief wird in dieser oder ähnlicher Form nicht mehr jede Woche erscheinen, sondern nur noch einmal im Monat. Die Gründe dafür liegen in dem hohen Zeitaufwand für die Schulleitung, besonders aber die Fülle an Informationen, die man manchmal nicht in Gänze aufnehmen und verarbeiten kann. Ziel ist, Sie in Zukunft in kleineren Häppchen auf bestimmte wichtige Dinge aufmerksam zu machen, die Sie dann auf der Webseite der Schule finden.
Das nächste anstehende Schulereignis sind die Besinnungstage (retreat). Bitte entnehmen Sie Näheres dazu dem Schreiben von Frau Carcamo.
Im Rückblick ist zu erwähnen, dass nun auch Herr Harry Gerbig aus China eingetroffen ist, der mit seiner reichen Erfahrung und seiner Ausbildung als Sozialpädagoge als Beratungslehrer, aber auch als Theaterpädagoge und DaF-Lehrer eingesetzt wird. Besonders die Aussicht auf Schultheatergruppen hat bei den Schülern Begeisterung hervorgerufen.
Ich möchte Sie außerdem auf einen sensiblen Punkt der Schulregeln hinweisen, unter dem Schreiben finden Sie andere Hinweise:
In Bezug auf den Dress-Code hat die Schule im Rahmen der Schulstrategie entschieden, eher eine pädagogische Lösung zu wählen. Die früheren Vorschriften werden eher als Empfehlungen verstanden, Konflikte werden mit Beratungslehrer und Eltern im Gespräch gelöst. Ziel ist es, Einsicht zu erzeugen und zu lernen, das äußere Erscheinungsbild zu reflektieren und auf die Situation und die Gefühle anderer Rücksicht zu nehmen.
In den anstehenden Elternabenden wird nicht wie früher ein gedrucktes Exemplar des Handbuchs verteilt werden. Die aktuellste Version ist auf der Webseite einsehbar und kann bei Bedarf ausgedruckt werden. Die Schule wird Sie bei Veränderungen informieren.
Eine sehr erfreuliche Nachricht: In Kürze werden Deutschkurse und Tagalog-Kurse an der Schule angeboten werden, die auch den Eltern offen stehen. Nähere Informationen gehen Ihnen baldmöglich zu.

In diesem Heft möchte ich Sie außerdem auf die Informationen zu den außerunterrichtlichen Aktivitäten hinweisen und zu den eindrucksvollen Fotos und Texten zur Einschulung der Erstklässler.

Helpful reminders
To help you transition easily, especially for our new parents, here are some things that may be important:
1. The Circular - Our newsletter is sent to all parents, teachers, and students monthly starting September. If you hear of anyone not able to receive it, please have them send an email to econcepcion@gesm.org so this can be addressed.

2. Canteen - For more information about our canteen, check out them out here or read the flyer here. If you wish to enrol your account with the school canteen, you may download the registration form here and submit the accomplished form to them.

3. Library - Our library is a treasure trove of books! Know more about what we have and what we offer by visiting the library page.

4. GEB - The GEB is our parents' association. Get yourself involved with the school and be part of making important decisions by being a member of the GEB. For more information, please click here.

5. Bus Service - Is your child using the school bus? Do you plan to? You can know more about our accredited bus companies, their services, areas covered, and their contact details here.

6. Parents' Evening - We will invite all parents to come to school in the next weeks to attend an orientation about GESM and their children's respective classes. Please watch out for this.
Secondary Student Retreat
Der Retreat (deutsch Orientierungstage oder "Besinnungstage" der DESM, ein mehrtägiger Schulausflug, ist aufgrund allgemeiner Nachfrage erneuert worden. Auf nachdrücklichen Wunsch unserer Studentenschaft hat die SMV eine Tradition wiederbelebt, die in den letzten zwei Jahren vermisst wurde. Die neuerliche Duchführung sollte dazu führen, dass die Orientierungstage fester Teil unserer Schulkultur werden. Schüler*innen, die diese Erfahrung schon gemacht haben, freuen sich darauf, und stecken andere mit ihrer Begeisterung an.
Der diesjährige Schulausflug wurde von Herrn Thiergen und dem Senior Management Team am Ende der letzten Schule beschlossen und wird auch von Herrn Frank, unserem neuen Schulleiter, unterstützt. Frau Karen Carcamo meldete sich als erste freiwillig, um als SMT-Mitglied Verantwortung für die Planung der Veranstaltung zu übernehmen. Andere Freiwillige sind unsere Lehrer. Frau Bärtges, Frau Carcamo, Herr Iza und Herr Ransom haben zusammen mit dem Studentenrat (Dia Mate) die Aktivitäten organisiert.
Der Schulausflug findet von Mittwoch, 19. September bis Freitag, 21. September, im Rizal Recreation Center statt (RRC). Dieser Veranstaltungsort wurde aus verschiedenen Gründen ausgewählt: wegen des günstigen Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnisses, der großzügigen Räume und dem Reiz der Umgebung.
Während der RRC mit seinen Veranstaltungen in der Regel eine religiöse Ausrichtung hat, sind die schulischen Besinnungstage wie alle Veranstaltungen der DESM immer weltanschaulich neutral, aber auch von Toleranz und Verständnis gegenüber Andersdenkenden geprägt. Unserer Lehrkräfte achten darauf, dass diese Vorgaben immer eingehalten werden.
Die Orientierungs- oder Besinnungstage finden am Anfang des Schuljahres statt, weil wir möchten, dass sich die Schüler*innnen auf die Grundlagen unseres pädagogischen Programms besinnen und von hier aus das Schuljahr mitgestalten. Nicht zuletzt wird so der Zusammenhalt der Schülerschaft schon zu Beginn gestärkt, vor allem auch mit den neuen Schüler*innen. Zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt wäre die Wirkung weniger intensiv, außerdem sollten Schüler*innen sich noch nicht zu sehr mit Examensvorbereitungen belastet fühlen.
Wir möchten, dass sich alle Schüler als Teil unserer GESM-Familie wertgeschätzt fühlen. Die Besinnungstage sind eine gute Gelegenheit, die Vorstellungen des pädagogischen Leitbilds unserer Schule zu verstehen, zu reflektieren, und zu leben.

The GESM school retreat is back by popular demand! After much pressure from our student body, the Student Council has revived a tradition which has been sorely missed for the past for the past two years. This action will reinfuse the retreat as a part of our school culture. Students who have had this experience are already excited about this opportunity to collaborate with fellow students through House, Student Council, and learning activities.
This year’s retreat was finally approved by Mr Thiergen and the Senior Management Team at the end of last school year and has been further endorsed by Mr Frank, our new Head of School. Ms Carcamo volunteered to be the SMT member responsible for overseeing the planning of the event. Other volunteers are teachers, Ms Bärtges, Ms Carcamo, Mr Iza and Mr Ransom together with the student council via Dia Mate, have organised the activities for the experience.
From Wednesday, September 19 until Friday, September 21, the retreat will be held at the Rizal Recreation Centre (RRC). This venue was chosen for several different reasons, value for accommodations, spacious property, ability to host our 170 students attending, and the comfort with the Centre expressed by the GESM teachers and students who participated in years past. While RRC usually has a religious basis for their valuable work, please be assured that GESM’s participation at the location is as always strictly secular. Adherence to our school's ethical and non-denominational orientation will be monitored by the accompanying teachers. However, in line with our values of we will all be respectful to different views and beliefs.
Finally, the retreat is being held at the beginning of the year to support the launch of our newly updated vision and mission into our daily school lives. We want all students to feel valued as a part of our GESM family and have the opportunity to understand and engage in who we are and where we are going together. This launch is just one more reason that this year’s retreat is an exciting time to be part of GESM. As one, we can support each other, both our new and returning students, by offering them a chance to get involved right from the start.

Dear Parents,
On September 10, 2018 (Monday) - September 14, 2018 (Thursday) ECA will be having its activity trial week. All activities offered by ECA will be open for discovery so that all students from GESM and LFM may choose on which activity suits them the best.
At 1:30pm when all students are dismissed from their classes, ECA coaches will be at the lobby waiting with the signage of their respective activity. All interested students may fall in line and sign up to try the activity (this is not the official registration, this is only for trial). They will be dismissed at 3:10pm. You may pick them up at the Lobby area.
A second session would be made available at 3:30pm to 5:00pm you may also choose from the offered activities on this time slot.
Registration forms will be given to the students/parents to officially register your child into an activity, please give us the completed form as soon as possible. (the registration form will be made available at the ECA office in front of the parking lot room A114)
The following week September 17, 2018 – September 20, 2018 will be the start of the normal ECA programme.
All schedules will still be subject to change, depending on the number of students signing up for the activity.
