GESM’s Model United Nations Club were delighted to be a part of the 24th edition of Benilde MUN, taking place from March 2nd though the 4th. Hosted by St. Benilde College of De La Salle University, this well-run event saw over 300 delegates participating to tackle a host of issues from climate change to human rights.
Kicking off the event on Day 1, the students were treated to a speech by former presidential candidate Leni Robredo. Afterwards, the local press interviewed GESM’s Secretary General Shagorika Kar.
Day 2 began with a heartfelt talk by ASEAN Youth Advocate Network founder Mirus Ponon. His personal journey from the slums Paco, Manila to De la Salle University’s “Most Outstanding Undergraduate, was invigorating and inspiring. His theme of “THE WHY in MUN” was just the energy boost the delegates needed to head back to committees for the rest of the day.
Day 3 dawned and the last of the resolution debating done before it was time to head to the final plenary session for the awards ceremony and final speeches. It is with great pride we can announce Shagorika Kar (IB-1) received the best delegate award in the committee on UN Women.
But the most important takeaway of this and all MUN events is the growth of those who participated. From the valuable leadership, writing and oral speaking skills to the vast amount of real-world knowledge, those student-delegates who attended walked away with a great deal of confidence and enhanced life-skills. In addition to Shagorika, those GESM students that accomplished this were:Aryan Sharma (IB-1), Seung Han (IB-1), Shivank Krishnakumar (Gr. 9I) and Alex Ruiz Inkanen (Gr. 9.)We are all looking forward already to our next event this fall:MUN LOCALS hosted by ISM.
