Cross-Grade Collaboration and the Collaboration Period

At GESM we believe learning thrives when students meet across boundaries — of language, age, and subject. Our cross-grade collaboration encourages pupils from different sections and language groups to work together on creative, exploratory projects that extend classroom learning and build community.

What is the Collaboration Period?

The Collaboration Period is a structured time when selected students from different year groups are invited to join peers outside their regular classes. During these periods, students form mixed teams and pursue self-chosen projects in areas such as visual arts, performing arts, and science & technology. The goal is to foster creativity, peer learning, and intercultural exchange while allowing students to follow interests that complement the school curriculum.

HOW STUDENTS WORK TOGETHER

Shared events

Throughout the school year, pupils collaborate across classes at various school events and celebrations, applying teamwork and communication skills in real contexts.

Why it matters

Cross-grade collaboration helps students develop:
  • Leadership and mentorship

  • Teamwork and communication

  • Creativity and problem-solving

  • Project planning and responsibility

  • Confidence working in multilingual environments

  • Respect for different perspectives and cultures

Flexibility and support

Collaboration Periods also provide some flexibility within the school timetable. These periods can be used to create additional learning opportunities outside the regular classroom setting, such as giving German learners more opportunities to practise speaking German, offering additional Mathematics support to students who need it, or preparing for performances, presentations and school events. This flexibility allows the school to respond to students’ needs and to make use of time in ways that complement regular lessons.
