How Grade 4 Explores Wellbeing Through Healthy Choices and Science
Written By: So Yeon Kim & Sebastian Fittges

This term, Grade 4 has been exploring the Who We Are Unit of Inquiry through a question that connects closely to everyday life: How do the choices we make affect our wellbeing?
A highlight of the unit has been the collaboration between the English and German Grade 4 classes. Students began by sharing ideas about healthy choices at home and at school, as well as choices involving food, relationships and how we care for our minds. The two classes also come together at different points throughout the unit to explore ideas and learn alongside one another, giving students opportunities to build a shared understanding.
Working in groups, students listened to different perspectives and developed their understanding of what it means to make healthy choices. They then presented their findings, with every student taking an active role. It was lovely to see them communicating across languages, supporting one another and working together.
Who We Are – Exploring Well-being
The inquiry also connected with Grade 4’s Science lessons on the digestive system. Students explored the organs involved in digestion and investigated what happens to food as it travels through the body. This helped them see how the food we choose relates to caring for our bodies.
The whole Grade 4 group then created a digestive system model and took part in a practical experiment. As they observed parts of the digestive process, there was plenty of curiosity, teamwork, laughter and excitement.
These experiences are helping students see how learning across subjects connects to their daily lives. As the Who We Are inquiry continues, they will explore more ways their choices can support their physical, mental and social wellbeing.
