Exploring International Studies with Professor Julian Droogan

On August 24, students at GESM had the opportunity to meet Professor Julian Droogan, Head of the School of International Studies at Macquarie University, during an information session on International Studies.
Professor Droogan brings extensive experience in the field of international security and contemporary global challenges. His research focuses on online extremism, disinformation, South Asian violent extremism and terrorist cultures. Throughout his career, he has also worked with government departments, research organisations and community groups, applying academic research to real-world security challenges.
During his visit, Professor Droogan gave students an insight into his own work and discussed how research in International Studies can help us better understand some of the complex issues affecting societies today. His experience provided students with a perspective that extended beyond the classroom, showing how academic knowledge can be applied to challenges in the wider world.
The session also introduced students to Macquarie University’s International Studies program. The multidisciplinary degree brings together areas such as politics, history, economics and sociology, allowing students to explore how countries and societies interact and how global issues develop.
Students learned about several areas covered by the program, including international politics and diplomacy, cultural intelligence, international security and the effects of emerging technologies. The degree also provides opportunities to gain international experience through exchange programs and internships, while developing practical skills in research, strategic communication, problem-solving and analysing complex global issues.
For students considering a future in an internationally focused field, the session provided an opportunity to learn more about the subject directly from an academic working in the field and to discover some of the pathways available through International Studies.
