It was a proud and powerful moment for the Grade 5 students of the German European School Manila (GESM) as they conducted a meaningful interview with Ambassador Sylvie Bollini of the Council of Europe. As part of their PYP Exhibition—centered on the theme of racism—the students demonstrated not only their skills in research, persuasive writing, and data interpretation, but also their deepening understanding of global issues.
A question from one student struck at the heart of the discussion:“What gives you hope that the world can become more fair and equal for everyone, no matter their race?”

Ambassador Bollini’s response was heartfelt and inspiring:
“You. The hope is you. The simple fact that you are addressing such an important topic is already a signal for me... I'm thanking you that you want to interview me and know more about what the Council is doing and what we can do altogether, because it's not a fight that we can win on our own.”
Her message deeply resonated with the students and affirmed the importance of their inquiry.
Encounters like this highlight the true power of education—not only to inform, but to awaken empathy, inspire action, and empower young people to engage with the world around them.
With thoughtful conversations and courageous questions, these GESM learners are already stepping into their roles as the next generation of changemakers.
