Dear colleagues,
wir stehen vor einer großen Herausforderung. Seit nahezu zwei Wochen sind wir gezwungen, Schule und Unterricht ganz neu zu organisieren.
We are currently facing a great challenge. For almost two weeks now we have been forced to close our campus and to completely reorganize our school and lessons.
Bewährte wie erfolgreiche Methoden, die man im Klassenzimmer anwenden kann, fallen plötzlich weg. Schülerinnen und Schüler sowie unsere Kolleginnen und Kollegen können nicht mehr gemeinsam an einer Sache im direkten Kontakt zusammenarbeiten, sich austauschen und unterstützen. Alles findet nur noch durch einen Filter statt, gleich ob Video, Chat oder Austausch von Dateien. Es fehlt die Authentizität.
The proven methods we have used in the classroom successfully simply do not apply anymore. Our students and our colleagues can no longer work together, exchange ideas or support each other in direct contact. Now everything is filtered since we are restricted to collaborate via email, chat, video or simply by exchange of files. Authenticity – that’s what is missing.
Dies betrifft aber nicht nur den Unterricht als solches. Es ist das soziale Miteinander in den Pausen, beim Mittagessen, bei Aktivitäten wie Sport und Musik, selbst die Auseinandersetzung mit anderen bei Meinungsverschiedenheiten. Alles, was soziales Leben ausmacht, ist extrem eingeschränkt.
Unfortunately, this does not only concern teaching as such. It applies also to the social interaction during breaks, at lunch, during activities such as sports and music, even to the debates with peers. Everything that makes up social life is extremely limited.
Das trifft uns aber nicht nur im Hinblick auf Schule, sondern jeden von uns auch in seiner privaten Situation. Für Sie zu Hause, genauso wie auch für unsere Kolleginnen und Kollegen heißt es mit einem Mal, Doppelbelastungen auszubalancieren. Zwischen Familie und Beruf von zu Hause aus. Wie kann ich meinem Kind in der Situation helfen, wenn ich doch selbst gerade Unterricht machen muss. Unterricht, bei dem ich auf die Mitwirkung der Eltern angewiesen bin, vor allem wenn es um die Jüngsten und Kleinsten unserer Schulgemeinschaft geht.
This affects us not only regarding school but also each of us in our private lives. For you at home, as well as for our colleagues, it suddenly means keeping two balls in the air at the same time, finding the balance between attention to the family and working from home: How can I help my child in this situation when I have to teach at the same time? Teaching, in which I am dependent on the participation of parents while I am a parent, too, especially when it comes to the youngest members of our school community.
Dazu kommen dann noch die Sorgen der Angehörigen, die aus Europa oder wo auch immer sie zu Hause sind, regelmäßig nachfragen, ob es einem denn wirklich gut gehe, oder man nicht besser zurück kommen wolle.
In addition to this, there are the concerns of relatives from home in Europe or in other places abroad who ask again and again whether we are really well and if we really wouldn’t rather go back home, while our homes are here in the Philippines.
Ich persönlich bin zu allererst beeindruckt, wie schnell und erfolgreich unsere Kolleginnen und Kollegen, die der Verwaltung und die Lehrkräfte die Umstellung auf den Weg gebracht haben. Das war eine große logistische wie pädagogische Herausforderung.
First and foremost, I am impressed by the speed and success with which our colleagues - the administration and the teaching staff - managed to go through this transition. Indeed, it was a great logistical and pedagogical challenge.
Mit einem Mal ist „Distance Learning“ kein Fremdwort mehr, sondern gelebter Alltag von Kindergarten bis zu Klasse 12. Dabei müssen nicht zuletzt auch Regeln zum Datenschutz eingehalten werden. Fragen mussten kurzfristig beantwortet werden: „Welche Plattform ..., wie Live-Unterricht gestalten ..., welche Apps eignen sich..., wie kommt Material zu den Schülerinnen und Schülern?“
Suddenly, "distance learning" is no longer just a strange term, but a part of daily life for every student from Kindergarten to Grade 12. And even more difficult due to regulations on data protection that must be observed or due to the questions which need to be answered on short notice: Which platform are we allowed to use? How should we design live lessons? Which apps are suitable? How to get hard copies and material to the pupils?
Die Vielfalt, mit deren Hilfe vor allem im Bereich Kindergarten und Grundschule die Lehrkräfte arbeiten, ist großartig, wohl wissend, dass es in diesem Bereich ohne Mithilfe der Elternhäuser unmöglich wäre.
It is remarkable to see the diversity with which our staff is handling the challenges, especially in kindergarten and on the Primary levels. At the same time, we fully understand that it would be impossible to succeed without the help of the parents at home.
Dazu kommt die Herausforderung, Prüfungen und Leistungsnachweise neu zu organisieren, Klasse 10 und 12 stehen vor ihren Mock-Exams. Diese werden ab der kommenden Woche stattfinden, während für die schriftlichen Leistungsnachweise passende Formate eingesetzt werden. Aus meiner Sicht ebenfalls ein großartiger Erfolg.
On top of it, in the upper grades, there was the challenge of reorganizing the upcoming examinations and assessments. Grades 10 and 12 are about to take their mock exams. These will start next week, and suitable new online formats will be used for the regular assessments - a great accomplishment, in my opinion.
In dieser Phase haben wir insgesamt auch von unserem regelmäßigen Austausch mit den Schulen in der Region profitiert, die bereits seit längerem mit der Situation einer Schulschließung umgehen müssen. Daher dürfen wir aber auch mit Stolz feststellen, dass wir in Teilen Möglichkeiten auf den Weg bringen konnten, die anderen Schulstandorten scheinbar verwehrt sind. Unser Door to Door Lieferservice gehört zum Beispiel dazu, in Teilen auch der Live-Unterricht per Videokonferenz.
Overall, we have also benefited from our regular exchanges with schools in the region, some of which have had to deal with school closures for some weeks now. However, we are proud to say that in some cases we have been able to create solutions that other schools at their location could or would not come up with. Our door-to-door delivery service, for example, is one of those solutions, and the live lessons via video conferences.
Wichtig für den Erfolg war und ist aber auch die Rückendeckung und vielfältige wie positive Rückmeldung aus unseren Elternhäusern.
An important factor to the success was and is the backing from you, our students’ parents, as well as the many (positive) feedback we’ve received.
Kommende Woche gehen wir in die dritte Woche Und auch in dieser werden wir weiter für unsere Schülerinnen und Schüler da sein. Dafür danke ich vor allem auch unseren Kolleginnen und Kollegen. Ohne sie wäre das nicht möglich.
Soon, we are entering the third week in this new setting. And as in the past weeks, the school shall continue to be there for our students. For this, I thank our colleagues. Without them none of these successes would be possible.
