GESM’s Model United Nations Club took advantage of an invitation from Chinese International School Manila to be a part of the fourth edition of CISMUN, held on March 6th and 7th. Six GESM students participated as full delegates and an additional two attended as observers. The conference theme, “Synergy: Developing Peace Through Collective Action” was an appropriate one for today’s global tensions, set the tone for the weekend of speeches, resolutions and dealmaking.
Starting off the event on Day 1, the students were introduced to the conference by an engaging keynote speaker, Ms. Janine Nicole Liao. With many years working with the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity, Ms. Liao, shared real-life experiences about how negotiation tactics have helped lead to peaceful resolutions in the southern regions of The Philippines with the Moro movements and other separatists. With that, the students scurried off to their committees to take on such agendas as “Addressing US Aggression in South America, “The Yemeni Crisis” and finally, one revealed to the Ad Hoc Committee via secret envelopes on Day 1, “Maduro in Chains”.
Day 2 began with students returning to their committees. After the last of the resolution writing and voting was done, it was time to head to the final plenary session for the awards ceremony and final speeches.
Representing GESM at CISMUN were Secretary General Diego B. (Gr. 11), Kohwoon S. (Gr. 11), Mara Q. (Gr. 11), Wen Wen L. (Gr.11) , Summer D. (Gr 9) Deputy Secretary General Muhammad S. (Gr.9), Dalila C. (Gr. 8) and Tulika K. (Gr.7).
As always, new relationships, valuable leadership skills, writing and oral speaking skills were gained. On the whole, the GESM student delegates were motivated and inspired to participate in future MUN events and conferences that GESM typically attends. Next up will be MUN LOCALS on offer at the start of the 2026-2027 academic school year.
