With the help of DaF coordinator Marta Komicz and the student council, we compiled messages from students in different grade levels about what they actually think about having to quarantine themselves and the distance learning set-up we now have.

Ich bin seit 7 Tagen in meinem Haus eingesperrt. Ich habe alles in meinem Haus gegessen. Ich verhungere. Alles was ich tue ist YouTube anschauen und “online Schule” machen. Das Leben ist jetzt gerade sehr langweilig. Hilfe!!!!!!!!!
I've been locked in my house for seven days. I've eaten everything in my house. I'm starving. All I do is watch YouTube and study online. Life is very boring right now. Help!!!!!!!!
Ich denke, dass die online Schule besser als die normale Schule ist. Es ist ein bisschen verwirrend, weil es nicht normal ist, aber ich denke, dass manche Fächer jetzt einfacher für mich sind, weil ich mehr Ruhe habe. Und ich kann später aufwachen, was viel besser als 5 Uhr morgens ist!
I think online school is better than regular school. It's a little confusing because it's not normal, but I think some subjects are easier for me now because I have more peace and quiet. And I can wake up later, which is much better than 5am!

Es ist sehr schwierig, weil meine Eltern zu Hause sind. Meine Wohnung ist klein, es gibt keinen Platz und ich möchte irgendwohin gehen, aber ich darf das nicht machen. Ich habe nie meine Eltern so viel gesehen wie jetzt und es macht keinen Spaß. Ich weiß nicht, wie ich hier noch einen Monat bleiben kann.
It's very difficult because my parents are at home. My apartment is small, there is no room and I want to go somewhere, but I am not allowed to do that. I've never seen my parents as much as now and it's not fun. I don't know how I can stay here another month.
Ich bin zufrieden, da ich wegen des online Unterrichtes mehr Freizeit habe. Während der normalen Schulzeit habe ich zu wenig Zeit, um mich zu entspannen. Gestern habe ich eine Liste mit allen Sachen gemacht, die ich während dieses "Lockdowns" machen könnte, z.B.: einen Kuchen backen, einen neuen Tanz lernen, lesen und Klavier üben.
I am happy because I have more free time because of the online lessons. During normal school hours I have too little time to relax. Yesterday I made a list with all the things I could do during this "lockdown", for example: bake a cake, learn a new dance, read and practice the piano.
Ich finde die Online-Kurse sehr langweilig, weil ich die Schule bevorzuge. Die Arbeit zu Hause ist sehr schlecht und ich kann mich nicht gut konzentrieren. Ich liebe meine Eltern, aber sie sind nervig. Sie sitzen in meinem Zimmer und schauen mir zu, wenn ich lerne. Es ist sehr nervig. Ich würde den ganzen Tag Mathe in der Schule machen, als eine Stunde Mathe zu Hause. Und das ist seltsam, weil ich eigentlich Mathe hasse. Ich vermisse sogar die Kantine, obwohl ich in meinem Haus sehr lecker essen kann. Ich vermisse auch, wenn meine Lehrer mir sagen: <shhhhh, du bist sehr laut!>
I love my parents, but they're annoying. They sit in my room and watch me study. It's very annoying. I'd do math all day at school than an hour of math at home. And that's weird because I actually hate math. I even miss the cafeteria, although I can eat really well in my house. I also miss when my teachers tell me: <shhhh, you're very loud!>
Der online Unterricht funktioniert bei mir nicht gut, weil ich mich zu Hause während des Lernens nicht wohl fühle. Ein Vorteil ist, dass man keinen Stress hat, weil es keinen Lehrer im Raum gibt und es gibt auch andere Fristen für die Aufgaben.
The online lessons don't work well for me because I don't feel comfortable at home while learning. One advantage is that you don't have stress because there is no teacher in the room and there are other deadlines for the assignments.
In den letzten Tagen habe ich gemerkt, wie sehr ich die Schule vermisse. Normalerweise hasse ich die Schule, weil es immer viel zu tun gibt. Ich würde gern zur Schule gehen oder etwas machen, aber ich muss in meinem Haus bleiben. Das Coronavirus ist sehr ärgerlich!
In the last few days I have noticed how much I miss school. Usually I hate school because there is always a lot to do. I would like to go to school or do something, but I have to stay in my house. The coronavirus is very annoying!

The online lessons are pretty decent and I am busy most of the time.
Der Online-Unterricht ist wirklich gut. Die Lehrer können durch einen Anruf Unterricht halten und wir bekommen Hausaufgaben, die in Ordnung sind. Es ist ziemlich stressig, weil ich mich nicht immer gut konzentrieren kann, aber ich kann in meinem eigenen Tempo arbeiten.
The online lessons are really good. The teachers can give lessons with one call and we get homework that is ok. It is quite stressful because I can't always concentrate well, but I can work at my own pace.

Ich finde das Lernen zu Hause gut. Einerseits ist es bequem zu Hause zu arbeiten, andererseits vermisse ich meine Freunde. Ich denke, dass der Online-Unterricht nützlich ist, weil man irgendwo lernen und arbeiten kann. Es trainiert unsere Gruppenarbeit und Computerfähigkeiten. Manche Leute mögen Online-Unterricht nicht, weil es neu für sie ist oder sie eine echte Interaktion wollen. Ich bin daran gewöhnt, deshalb mag ich den Online-Unterricht.
I think studying at home is good. On the one hand it's comfortable to work at home, on the other hand I miss my friends. I think that online teaching is useful because you can study and work somewhere. It trains our group work and computer skills. Some people don't like online lessons because it's new to them or they want real interaction. I'm used to it, so I like online lessons.
Manchmal ist das Lernen chaotisch, weil wir in der Klasse sehr viele Schüler sind. Außerdem kennen sich manche Lehrer nicht so gut mit der Technologie aus. Es ist ein neues System für alle, es ist also normal, dass es manchmal kompliziert ist.
Sometimes learning is chaotic because there are so many students in the class. Also, some teachers are not very familiar with the technology. It's a new system for everyone, so it's normal that sometimes it's complicated.

I think it's bad that I can't meet my friends. I'm really waiting for our first day back.
Weil ich so viel Freizeit habe, spiele ich mehr Gitarre als normalerweise und ich nutze mehr das Instagram oder ich schaue mir lustige Videos an. Ich hoffe, dass wir schnell in die Schule zurückkommen dürfen, aber bis dahin werde ich die Vorteile der online Schule genießen.
Because I have so much free time, I play more guitar than usual and I use the Instagram more or I watch funny videos. I hope we can get back to school quickly, but until then I will enjoy the benefits of online school.

Ich denke, dass wir positiv bleiben müssen. Manchmal ärgere ich mich über die Situation, über unsere Prüfungen, das Virus… Aber ich weiß, dass es wichtig ist. Wir müssen auf uns aufpassen und uns um unsere Familie kümmern.
I think we need to stay positive. Sometimes I get upset about the situation, about our exams, the virus... But I know it's important. We have to take care of ourselves and take care of our family.
Although there have been challenges with the online school system I think our school has overcome/is overcoming most of them in an unprecedented amount of time. Classes are just as efficient as they've always been and I look forward to the school continuing to work hard to maintain this level. -- Youssef Tarek

Online classes are very helpful, especially for the IB-2 students as they are currently in the process of reviewing for their exams, and these online classes give them an opportunity to ask doubts and get the teachers' feedback effectively. Moreover, it is also a great way to ensure that the students are motivated to study and try their best. -- Shraddha Puri
Being unable to go to school only a couple months before final IB exams has turned out to be a highly stressful situation. Online classes has allowed my classmates and I to have lectures with our teachers, reviewing topics we struggle with, and write past papers to prepare for our exams. We are able to contact our teachers during assigned time periods and have one-on-one calls to discuss our troubles in a subject. We have also been given time to selfstudy, allowing us to prepare for our mock exams in the forthcoming week. -- Kelly Price
