Understanding the GIB and IB Diploma Programmes at GESM

On 6 October 2026, the German European School Manila (GESM) hosted its GIB and IB Information Night as part of the Germany in Focus event series. Held in a hybrid format, the session welcomed parents and teachers, both on campus and online, to learn more about the school's diploma programmes and the educational opportunities available to students as they prepare for higher education.
The evening featured presentations from Mr. Volker Schlieske, Head of School, Mr. Sebastian Schaffer, German Programme Lead, and Mr. Veith Boettcher, Head of School. Together, they introduced the two diploma pathways, explained their academic structures, and discussed the role of German language education in preparing students for their future studies.
The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is an internationally recognised qualification for students in Grades 11 and 12. It provides a broad academic foundation across different subject areas while encouraging critical thinking, independent research, and communication skills. The diploma can provide access to universities around the world, including institutions in Germany, provided that students meet the relevant admission requirements.
The Gemischtsprachiges Internationales Baccalaureate (GIB) follows the same IB framework but incorporates German into selected academic subjects. At GESM, students study Biology and History in German, allowing them to develop their language proficiency beyond everyday conversations and traditional language lessons. Through these subjects, students learn to understand complex concepts, discuss academic topics, and express their knowledge in German.
While both the IB and GIB can provide pathways to German universities, the GIB offers an additional advantage for students considering degree programmes taught in German. Studying academic subjects in the language helps prepare students for the demands of university lectures, examinations, and research. A recognised GIB diploma can also serve as proof of German language proficiency for admission to German universities, although specific requirements should always be confirmed with the institution.
However, choosing between the two programmes also means considering the additional academic challenges involved. Studying subjects in German requires students to understand both the language and the subject content. For this reason, the GIB may be particularly suitable for students who already have a strong foundation in German and wish to develop their proficiency further, while the regular IB remains an equally valuable option for students with different academic strengths and future plans.
Throughout the session, families had the opportunity to gain a clearer understanding of the differences between the programmes, their academic expectations, and the factors to consider when choosing a pathway. These include students' interests, language abilities, and university aspirations.
We encourage all parents and teachers who attended the session to take a few moments to share their feedback. Your comments, questions, and suggestions will help us improve future information evenings and better address the needs of our school community: GIB & IB Information Night – Parent & Teacher Feedback – Fill out form
The GIB and IB Information Night provided families with an opportunity to explore how each programme can prepare students for the next stage of their education, whether in Germany, the Philippines, or elsewhere in the world.
