All of Grade 5 came together to begin unpacking our first Unit of Inquiry, Who We Are. Our Central Idea, “Understanding children’s rights empowers individuals and communities to promote fairness, protection, and responsible action for all children,” provided a meaningful foundation for students to explore their rights and responsibilities.
To promote engagement, curiosity, and deeper understanding, we began the unit with a provocation activity. Grade 5 students were introduced to the Visible Thinking Routine: “I See, I Think, I Wonder.” This routine encouraged students to observe carefully, share their initial interpretations, and generate questions about what they were seeing.
Through this process, students were encouraged to move beyond simply identifying what was in front of them and begin making connections, expressing their thinking, and questioning ideas related to fairness, protection, and children’s rights. The activity created an open space for students to listen to different perspectives and recognize that their classmates may interpret the same situation in different ways.
