Discovering the Magic of Shells

As part of our Unit of Inquiry on Rocks, we went on a wonderful field trip to a shell store hidden in a quiet village near our school — it felt like discovering a secret treasure chest! Inside, we found all kinds of shells: big, small, smooth, rough, shiny, swirly — each one unique. We learned that shells don’t just come from the sea; some are found in the mountains too. Sea shells are often smooth and delicate, while mountain shells are thicker and rougher.
We watched how the workers carefully clean and sort the shells by size, shape, and color. On the second floor, we saw how shells can be turned into beautiful and useful objects like plates, lampshades, jewelry, and ornaments. Ms. Naty even showed us how to make our own shell ornaments!
One of the highlights was choosing our favorite shells to take home — it felt like searching for little treasures. We also received free shell necklaces as souvenirs. We left with big smiles, full hearts, and a deeper appreciation for nature’s wonders!
